UAPB Men's Hoops Fall to Tulane

Updated: Jan 13, 2022

NEW ORLEANS, LA -- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men's basketball team suffered a tough 67-56 loss at Tulane Saturday afternoon at Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.

Senior guard Nicholas Jones led the Golden Lions scoring a season-high of 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including 3-of-5 from the three-point line. Markedric Bell and Joshuwan Johnson each added 12 points, with Bell a rebound shy of a double-double.

The Golden Lions led early before Tulane took the lead near the 13-minute mark of the first half and never trailed again in taking a 36-25 halftime lead.

In the second half, UAPB made its run to get back in the game. Following a double technical foul against each team and ensuing free throws, Johnson made the technical free throws and then a three-pointer to spark the 10-0 run. A basket by Shaun Doss and a three-pointer by Jones cut the Golden Lion margin to 46-44 with under 12 minutes to play.

However, UAPB did not make another shot from the field over the next eight minutes as turnovers slowed the comeback.

"We can't have these kinds of turnovers and think we're going to win a ball game," said UAPB head coach George Ivory of his team's 18 turnovers. "However, it shows what kind of team we have to have that many turnovers and still be in a ball game."

The Golden Lions return to action Tuesday in a 7 p.m. game at North Texas. The UAPB Sports Network radio broadcast begins at 6:45 p.m. on 99.3 FM The Beat, online at uapblionsroar.com/live, and on the free UAPB Athletics app.
