EUGENE, OR – History is made once again at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff with the track star from Trinidad and Tobago, Safiya John, qualifying to compete in the 2022 NCAA National Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field, known as Tracktown USA.
John’s initial goal to start the season was to compete on the highest level of collegiate track and field, and with all of the hard work she has put in on the track when others aren’t watching is paying off.
John said earlier in the season, as she ranked as one of the top 24 heptathletes in the nation, “I remain hopeful of staying in the top 24 positions nationally in the heptathlon so that I can represent UAPB at the highest level of collegiate track and field,” in which she did to secure the last spot and represent all HBCU’s in the multi-event nationally.
After winning the SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference) Outdoor Track and Field Championships with 5602 points which happens to be her personal best, including wins in the high jump, long jump, and the 100-meter hurdles, which is her most vital event, John knows she’ll have to record a new PB to not only shock the world but shock herself as well, to bring hardware back to Pine Bluff.
The heptathlon will start at 1pm PT, beginning with the 100-meter hurdles, followed by the high jump at 2pm PT, the shot put at 4pm PT, and the 200-meter dash at 7:43pm PT. The meet will be televised on ESPN 3.
