PRAIRIE VIEW, TX – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's volleyball team took a tough loss against the Prairie View A&M Panthers with a final score of 0-3 (19-25, 22-25, 18-25) Sunday evening at the Baby Dome.
Sophomores Jasmine Fuqua and Zyonn Smith along with junior Haley Gomez each lead the team in kills with six kills apiece. Sophomore Nyah Ellis lead with 20 digs followed by sophomore Elyssa Kennedy with nine digs and junior Kaila Robinson with seven digs. Kennedy led the way in assists today, tallying 12 assists followed by sophomore Nikole Akamine with 11 assists. On the defensive side, Gomez and junior Destiny Thomas lead the team in blocks with four each and Fuqua added three blocks for the Lady Lions.
In the beginning of the season, the Lady Lions fell to the Lady Panthers with a final score of 0-3 and were looking forward to rematch PVAMU. The Lady Lions, well focused, had a game plan which was simply to dominate on the court. Fuqua got things started for the Lady Lions scoring the first point of the match followed by a point from Robinson to get the energy flowing for the Lady Lions. However, Prairie View A&M would make it known that they came to play as well with a quick 12-12 tie in the first set. The Lady Lions held on for as long as they could but fell short in the first set with a score of 19-25.
After the first set, the Lady Lions would regroup, looking to take the second set with them and tie the match. Great plays from Smith and Robinson would keep the energy going for the Lady Lions but ran out of gas, falling in the second set with a score of 22-25.
The Lady Lions played the third set with a sense of urgency battling with the Lady Panthers keeping the game close, but the Lady Panther momentum would take over causing the Lady Lions to fall in the third set with a score of 18-25 and lose the match with a final score of 0-3.
The Lady Lions return to the court looking to bounce back and finish their Texas campaign tomorrow against Texas Southern at 6:30 p.m. at the H&PE Arena.
