GRAMBLING, LA --The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff volleyball team took a tough loss in a rival matchup against Grambling St. with a score of 3-1 (17-25, 24-26, 25-14, 24-26) on the road Monday evening at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.
Sophomore Zyonn Smith lead the Lady Lions with 13 kills followed by junior Kaila Robinson with 11 kills. Smith would also lead the team with 16 digs with freshman Jade Smith adding 15 digs. Sophomore Nikole Akamine was a great helping hand for the Lady Lions, leading the team with 19 assists. Junior Haley Gomez did what she does best on the defensive side leading the Lady Lions with six blocks.
The Lady Lions played a very competitive game in the first set; however, Grambling St. would claim the first set with a score of 25-17.
UAPB would regroup in between sets to turn up the intensity against the Tigers in the next set going toe-to-toe in the second set and before falling to Grambling 26-24.
UAPB would cut up the intensity even more and play with a sense of urgency in the third set with Gomez' defensive play and contribution from sophomore Jasmine Fuqua. The Lady Lions clinched the third set with a score of 25-17, with a match score of 2-1 after the third set.
The Lady Lions came out with the energy in the fourth set looking to tie the score at two, going back and forth with Grambling St. UAPB would go up 24-20 in the fourth set but ran out of fuel falling to the Tigers with a set score of 26-24, with Grambling St. winning the matchup 3-1.
The Lady Lions volleyball team will look to bounce back on Sunday February 14th at home against Jackson St. at noon.
