UAPB Soccer Wins in Style Over Mississippi U. For Women

PINE BLUFF, AR -- The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women's soccer team defeated the Mississippi University for Women Owls with a final score of 3-0 on Friday afternoon at Pumphrey Stadium to advance to a two-game winning streak.

The mission was simple for the Lady Lions, go out and execute in which they did early in the game. Continuing to dominate in her freshman campaign season, Iyanah Hicks was all over the field today and got things going for the Lady Lions early, scoring the first goal for the team with an assist from sophomore Mariela Flores and junior Cameron Rodriguez twelve minutes in the first half to get a 1-0 lead over the Owls.

One minute later after the goal by Hicks, senior Clara Morales battled to gain possession of the ball before assisting freshman Tobi McCoy in scoring a difficult long distant shot for the Lady Lions, putting the team up 2-0 over the Owls.

Now with a great amount of confidence built and the momentum going the Lady Lions way, sophomore Alondra Lepe decided to get in her bag on offense with style. Dribbling up the field, Lepe saw an opening for a McCoy shot but with selflessness, McCoy allowed the ball to go through her legs and to Hicks who would score the final goal for the Lady Lions putting their lead at 3-0 and improving to a two-game winning streak.

"Doing the work in the first half is always an advantage for us and watching how things are paying off is great to see", said UAPB head coach Erik Solberg about the victory.

Lady Lions soccer will prepare to get on the road to Jackson, Mississippi as they take on the Jackson State Tigers on Friday.
