PITTSBURG, KS – After taking a week off competition from their last meet at Pittsburg State, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff felt they had more in the tank and returned to Pitt. State’s Robert W. Plaster Center for competition in the 7th Annual Indoor Gorilla Classic.
The Lady Lions had a great weekend of competition with some athletes setting new personal bests.
In the throws, Joelle Stewart would crush her previous weight throw personal best of 15.77 meters with a throw of 16.18 meters to secure a fifth-place finish.
Also finishing in fifth place in the throws, this time in the women’s shot put would be Deonmonique Granville with a throw of 13.61 meters.
Jaylyn Hampton had an outstanding performance over the weekend in the women’s high jump, raising the bar for a new personal best with an impressive 1.60 meters to continue her improvements in clearing the bar. Hampton’s 1.60-meter jump secured a bronze medal finish.
Continuing her destruction through the competition in the women’s long jump, sensation Safiya John has the jumps down to a science. With her consistency on the runaway in her approach, John threw herself up and out into the sand to tuck and extend to 6.08 meters, securing another gold medal.
John is a fighter on the track. Humble for another medal, John’s consistency carried over to the women’s 60-meter hurdles and earned her a silver medal with a time of 8.35 seconds to go home with two shiny pieces of hardware around her neck.
On the men’s side, Caleb Snowden earned a bronze medal in the men’s high jump with a mark of 2.06 meters.
The Golden Lions will now guide their focus towards next week’s SWAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, held on Thursday and Friday at the Birmingham Crossplex.
