UAPB Track & Field Lights Up the Track at the ASU Red Wolf Open

JONESBORO, AR – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men's and women's track teams competed well over the weekend in the ASU Red Wolf Open meet on Friday and Saturday at the Arkansas State Track.


Both Golden Lion men's and women's teams showed true competitiveness on the runway in the jumps. Sophomore Clement Campbell Jr. dominated in the men's long jump, winning the competition with a jump of 7.42 meters (24' 4 ¼), claiming the victory by a solid two feet and some change.


In the women's long jump, UAPB went one and two with junior sensation Safiya John placing first with an impressive jump of 5.86 meters (19' 2 ¾), marking the only jump over 19 feet in the competition. Junior Katrina Small placed second in the women's long jump right behind John with a jump of 5.64 meters (18' 6") to take over the long jump.


Senior Rudy Alvarez hopped, skipped and jumped his way into second place in the men's triple jump with a wind-aided jump of 14.12 meters (45' 7 ¾), followed by freshman Joshua Holloway who placed third right behind Alvarez with a fair jump of 13.82 meters (45' 4 ¼).


Freshman Caleb Snowden clinched second place in the men's high jump with a mark of 2.06 meters (6' 9").


Dominating the outdoor circuit in the throws, sophomore Deandre Fyffe placed second in the men's discus with a mark of 52.68 meters (172' 10". Fyffe would bounce back in men's shot put, dominating for a first-place victory with a throw of 15.97 meters (52' 4 ¾) to continue his outdoor season demolition.


UAPB didn't just show out in the field events, but the running events as well. A day after winning the long jump, John placed second in the 100-meter hurdles with great competition, with a blazing time of 13.74 seconds.


UAPB ate up their competition in both the men's and women's 400-meter dash. Freshman Tatyana McKenzie moved around the track at a great pace to place first in the women's 400 with a winning time of 56.45 seconds with sophomore Jada Sabir milliseconds behind her finishing in second place with a time of 56.95 seconds. Senior Wade Garner cruised through the finish line of the men's 400 with a victory, winning by over two seconds with a time of 47.68 seconds.


After taking the dub in the women's 400-meter dash, McKenzie went on to take second place in the women's 200-meter dash, showing the poetry in her running with a time of 24.52 seconds.


In relay action, the UAPB women's 4 x 100-meter relay got the stick around the track in great competition with Central Arkansas track, pulling out the victory by five tenths of a second with a winning time of 46.25 seconds.


The women's 4 x 400-meter relay team would focus on capitalizing on the 4 x 100-meter relay victory, setting the bar for the 1600-meter relay team. Competing hard and giving their all on the track, UAPB would be neck and neck the entire race with Southwest Baptist before SBU would pull away to take first place and UAPB would take second place with a time of 4:03.08.


UAPB track and field will return to action next weekend in Fayetteville, AR for the John McDonnell Invitational track meet which will take place on Friday April 23rd, and Saturday April 24th.
