UAPB Track & Field Prepares for Competition in NCAA West First Round Championships

COLLEGE STATION, TX – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff track & field team will have three student-athletes compete in the NCAA West First Round Championships which will be held at Cushing Stadium at Texas A&M University, starting Wednesday May 26th and will conclude on Saturday May 28th.


After a great showing at the Southwestern Athletic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, three Golden Lions qualified to compete in the NCAA West First Round Championships. Senior Wade Garner will compete in the men's 400-meter dash, junior Katrina Small will see the runway again in the women's triple jump and junior sensation Safiya John will compete in the women's 100-meter hurdles.


All three Arkansas-Pine Bluff athletes put on a great show at the SWAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships to bring home gold medals with some good qualifying times and marks. Garner qualified in the men's 400-meter dash with a time of 46.77 seconds. John qualified in the women's 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.56 seconds and Small qualified in the women's triple jump with a mark of 12.76 meters.


UAPB head coach Christopher McCoy is excited about the meet and is very proud of his student-athletes for qualifying and is expecting some personal bests from the three. "My athletes can compete with anybody and beat in the country simply because of how competitive they are and the drive they have", said McCoy about his confidence in his athletes.


Garner will run in the 400-meter dash prelims on Wednesday at 7:25 p.m., John will run in the 100-meter hurdles prelims on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Small will triple jump on Saturday at 3:15 p.m.
