MONTGOMERY, AL – During the Spring 2021 season, the Golden Lions were scheduled to matchup with the Alabama State Hornets for the first time since 2016. Due to inclement weather, the game was canceled, ruled a no-contest, and would not be rescheduled. The Golden Lions will get their chance to matchup with the Alabama State Hornets for their homecoming on Saturday at 2 p.m. at ASU Stadium.
Last season just before the game was canceled, Arkansas-Pine Bluff trailed Alabama State (10 – 3) with 6:12 left in the second quarter just before lightning struck within a ten-mile radius of Simmons Bank Field.
QB Skyler Perry currently runs the show for the Golden Lions, leading with 729 passing yards.
WR Josh Wilkes leads the Golden Lions in receiving yards with 257 yards and will look to earn more receiving yards against Alabama State.
RB Kierre Crossley currently leads in rushing yards for Arkansas-Pine Bluff, rushing for a total of 182 yards so far this season.
On the defensive side for the Golden Lions, LB Monroe Beard III leads with 31 tackles and ranks third in the SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference) in sacks with a total of four sacks thus far this season.
In the last week's matchup against Prairie View A&M, the Golden Lions would trail early in the game before fighting back in the final quarter but falling short, losing their second conference game with a final score of (27 – 17).
Wilkes led the Golden Lions on the offensive end with 103 receiving yards with five receptions and one touchdown against Prairie View A&M, followed by QB Xzavier Vaughn who went 50%, throwing 4/8 to pick up 115 passing yards, including a long 82-yard pass to Wilkes for a touchdown.
On the defensive end, Beard III stopped the ball from progressing up the field with 12 tackles.
Alabama State is coming off a loss, falling to Florida A&M with a final score of (28 – 0) last weekend. QB Ryan Nettles leads the Hornets with 604 passing yards this season.
UAPB head coach Doc Gamble plans to bounce back this weekend against Alabama State and is looking to turn things up a notch on the field for the Golden Lions. "We have to play the game much better than we did last week and execute at a high level and take care of the football," said Gamble about what needs to be done to be successful against Alabama State.
