BIRMINGHAM, AL – After finishing a successful regular season, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff women’s basketball team punched their ticket to compete in the 2022 SWAC (Southwestern Athletic Conference) Basketball Tournament and will face Jackson State in the quarterfinal.
Securing the eighth seed in the SWAC tournament, the Lady Lions are looking to get redemption and upset the top-seeded Lady Tigers after dropping two regular-season games to JSU, 69-55 and 72-65.
Returning to the SWAC tournament since 2020, the Lady Lions have the right tools to upset Jackson State, and with it being the month of March, great things are expected from UAPB.
“It’s March, and it goes about whoever the best team is for 40 minutes,” said UAPB head coach Dawn Thornton.
The Lady Lions are led by First Team All-SWAC, Newcomer of the Year and former McDonald’s All-American Zaay Green, who averaged 15.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, and five assists, ranking second in the conference in dishing the basketball. She also ranks third in the NCAA in triple doubles.
Joyce Kennerson will be another vital asset in the Jackson State matchup as she brings her craftiness to the floor averaging nearly ten points per game with 3.1 rebounds and three assists to run the Lady Lion offense.
Maya Peat will play a massive role for the Lady Lions in the post, snatching rebounds and scoring points in the paint. Peat averages 7.5 points per game and grabs seven boards.
The Lady Lions will face a Jackson State team led by Ameysha Williams, who averages 19.3 points and 11.2 rebounds per game.
